at fifty-five, i’m starting to realize what all i’ve lived through…
…and it’s more than i gave it credit for.
i always think about my parents having been through world war ii and korea and vietnam, but we had the much longer and drawn out (for profit) middle eastern wars for decades, plus the 9-11 thing and covid. and speaking of, did you realize that gorbachev (last leader of sovier russia, the one that negotiated the berlin wall coming down and such with reagan) actually lived long enough to witness covid? he didn’t die till 2022, just living his quiet retired life.
i typically have music going while i type these – for some reason it helps me focus and cuts out the “outside noise”, which is odd as it is, by definition, outside noise – and today’s playlist (as in while i’m typing this) is an older disclosure radio set, which has had several “enjoy this while you’re in self isolation” and “don’t forget to socially distance when you go out” messages from the covid times.
i’d almost forgotten that was a thing.
it’s like the other day when i found a pair of shorts buried at the back of a drawer and through them on. half way through the day i sat down and swore it felt like something was in the leg pocket, and when i reached in i found a black disposable mask. i used to wash them when they were getting hard to come by to prolong their lives back then, and i’d just stick them in cargo pockets to get em clean again (and then i’d also randomly have one should i need it), but that shows how long it had been since those had been in the rotation.
i’ll be curious to see what other big events are on the horizon? i’m betting early november is gonna be a bit shit-showy.
