i saw a news story the other day that gave me odd flashbacks…
…and anything that flashes me back to high school can’t be that good.
not that high school was bad, per say…i met some good folks (JAB, bret, the michaels) and had a good time. graduated. moved on. unlike so many of my classmates, but never mind that now.
no, i was talking about a chat i had with several administration officials during the course of my high school “career” about my various hairstyles, or the fact i wore an ear ring, and how it seemed stupid as fuck that they had any issue with any of this. “seriously”, i’d ask them, “what the hell does it matter??!?”.
i always got the same answer – “it’s distracting to the other students and could hinder them from learning.”
fucking seriously?
my hair or my ear bling could make it to where little bubba gonzales don’t read good? (throwing all the small texas town stereotypes into one name there, ain’t i?) well, i have news for bubba’s parents…
if something that minor will distract your child from learning your child is destined to fail at life…period.
the hair or other modifications to the appearance of other students should have ZERO effect on how you learn – and again, if your brain is that easily distracted to the point that it’s detrimental to your educational processes than you are flat-out FUCKED. plain and simple. now stop your whining and bring me my burger…
…this all got reignited in my brainus because of a little girl, age seven, in tulsa oklafuckinhoma who was kicked out of a school because her dreadlocks (which she had last year as well, it’s not like she summered in jamaica or something) were deemed “too distracting” to other kids and so she was asked to leave. so a seven year old girl can’t go to school because of her hair? that’s kinda fucked up…
…even more so is the fact her dad is a hair stylist.
so a note to parents: if you think pink hair or a pierced nose (gee, wonder who’s on my mind right now?) will distract your kid to the point of not being able to learn, just pull them out of school and get them working NOW – at least that way they can be their loser friends’ manager by the time they flunk out of high school…
