in the great depression, stock brokers were so freaked out they were losing their shirts and the shirts (and pants, and homes, and lives…) of their investors that they were actually jumping from their high rise offices and commiting suicide due to the guilt and shame. ordinary people felt sorry for them. with the bailouts and bullshit this time around attitudes are a bit different…
