sometimes texas will texas in the worst ways

i’ve heard the man was absolutely wonderful in person, but because i never actually met him, the ironies in this are what really hit me first…

…allow me to explain:

over the weekend actor jonathan joss was shot and killed, allegedly (stupid lawyers) by a neighbor. he gained prominence voicing john redcorn on king of the hill, who was a native american “healer” who was having a long term affair under the guise of “treating the headaches” of one of the main character’s spouses. said couple also have a child, who happens to be native american in appearance, but dale, one of the main characters, made peace with there being some comanche blood somewhere back in his lineage or something as i recall, so no neighborhood violence on the show. but that kind of thing has certainly triggered violence among neighbors in the past!

while san antonio police say they have found no evidence to support it, joss’s husband (there’s a plot twist) say the neighbor shot him in a homophobic rage. whether or not this part is true remains to be seen, but it’s still sad to see some killed, if not for their orientation, then for whatever spurred the violence towards the unarmed actor and his spouse. what also remains a mystery is why he wasn’t included in the recent panel of characters at the austin tv conference where they recently celebrated the shows return to hulu august 4th with new episodes.

but the irony, to me, came from the fact he was killed for being gay when he is unabashedly amorously straight on the show, but that seems to be a hollywood thing. NPH’s character on how i met your mother was a total pussy hound but he was gay in real life. you know how people have issue when hollywood “whitewashes” things by, say, having tom cruise play “the last samurai” instead of an asian actor? but they never have issue with a gay guy lampooning as the horn dog straight guy. you know why? because nobody cares (nor should they), that’s why.
