the laws of the land don’t cease to exist on the football field (even in texas – i checked) and the law states that you can’t MAKE somebody salute the flag. period.
If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein.
at the height of world war ii a decision was handed down by the highest court in the land, on flag day (just to spike the ball), that stated that nobody can be forced to salute the flag in any way shape or form. and keep in mind back then the flag salute looked like this:
