i can’t decide if i feel lied to

here’s a bit for people my age and older…

…probably more for the older, given subject matter.

a recent vice article flies in the face of a story i was personally told and i’m not sure which to believe. nikki points out that, at the age he was when we had the conversation, he might have forgotten this happened. i’d like to believe i’m the one that got the truth, and this might be some sensationalist lore that just got billed as more than it was? but that could just be my ego talking.

it goes back over ten years when we went to see a show at the paramount for my birthday, which we’ve tried to do a few times since my first birthday there (my sixteenth, on 6/19/1987) was pretty epic when i dragged JAB, watts, and bret along to see sam kinison. we’ve also seen (and met) jim jeffries, seen patton oswalt, and i think one of the kevin smith things was around that time of year, but i could be wrong. anywho, this time we went to see “rickles and reeg”, i.e. don rickles and regis philbin.

surprisingly i can’t find a bit i did about this back then. it’s surprising because at the end of the show there was a q&a and i got to ask a question. a loose transcript:

sM: have you ever had anyone wait for you after a show to rough you up because they were pissed off at something you said?

dr: um….

rp: don’t answer that, don – sean, you’re a pretty big guy…are you waiting for us after the show?

sM: *chuckles*…oh no, not at all. i was just curious.

rp: okay, don, go ahead and answer…

dr: honestly, no…because when you come from a place of humor, not hate, people can tell the difference. they know i’m just joking around, getting a laugh, but it’s all in good fun…it’s not meant to be hurtful for hate’s sake, but for humor’s sake. and there’s a real difference there. so, no, people have never waited for me after the show.

sM: you sure that’s not just ’cause you knew frank and folks knew he knew people?

dr: pretty sure (laughs)

but according to vice, that ain’t right…and now i’m left to wonder.
