roadside ice

so, i think i finally had my first “spotting” the other day…

…of la migra, version 2025.

i was on my way to austin this morning and i saw emergency lights by the right side of the road so i stayed in the left lane, where i often drive. as i came into view they switched off the lights on all the vehicles, which i thought was weird. it was nine in the morning in broad daylight – it’s not like they’re hiding under cover of night. but when i got up to them and passed, i was kinda surprised by what i saw…

…the front vehicle was they one that had been pulled over – a black dodge crew cab dually with all four doors open, and not a soul inside. it was pulling a black trailer akin to what you’d use to haul away debris from a roofing job or something, but was also open and empty.

behind that were two very plain mid-sized suv’s. one blue, one yellow, no trim striping or bumper stickers or anything except very dark window tint, which was dark enough to where you couldn’t see inside nor could you see the led lights i knew to be there from before they were switched off. behind that were two caldwell country sheriffs in regularly marked ford explorers. milling about were two uniformed deputies and three or four what passes for “plain clothes law enforcement” but the tactical vests and balaclavas kinda hint that they’re not just a couple of dads heading to bass pro shop this morning.

they tried like hell to not glance my way as i drove by. of course, by the time i was heading home several hours later, there was zero trace any of this had gone down…but i guarantee someone’s roof job got delayed.

at least we can be sure these hard working laborers were the “worst of the worst” from south of the border, right?
