¿que? (for real – fed version)

one of my guilty pleasures…

…and i have quite a few, is on tuesdays, if the route is wrapping up kinda quick, and i’m feeling a bit nibbly, i hit popeye’s. they have a tuesday special where, when all is said and done, i get a good meal for around eight bucks. the location i hit is on 620 in the cat hollow section of north austin/pflugerville/round rock depending on how you look at it. it’s a very suburban area, so it’s odd that in the middle of it is a national franchise chicken joint where i am consistently the lone white face in the building and the only one to master the english language.

say what you wish, they have never once fucked up my order.

but the other day we had an additional english speaker in the building, at least remotely. they weren’t there in person. thank god. because that additional speaker was current south park darling and puppy killer, kristi noem. it was the “self deport psa” and it couldn’t be more of what you expect. threats and eagles and flags and shit. and while everything else on that network, geared towards spanish speakers, is actually IN spanish, this ad (and it’s captions) were all in english, which most of the network audience for this channel doesn’t speak, and if they do, typically not very well.

but hey, can’t say they didn’t warn you?

in advertising class in college (circa 1993?) we learned about the executive at coca-cola who lost his job after spending millions to run coke ads in spanish all over brazil, where they speak portuguese. that was just tone-deaf, “well, what else to brown people south of us speak?” ignorance. this seemed a lot more on purpose. they wanna make sure you DON’T catch it because, if you’re here, you should speak english? at least that’s the message i garnered from it. i won’t repeat any of the lines off it, but let’s just say it does very little to quell the opinion the latest south park episode sets of this lady.
