02/20/2002: “the gay welder story…”

okay, so MAYBE they’re not gay…i’ll give you that. i didn’t actually talk to them…

but you know that simpson’s episode, when homer’s afraid bart will turn gay, and so he takes him to a steel mill and everybody who works there is gay? DEFINITE flashbacks…i don’t mean to stereotype, but there are certain artists that groups of guys should NOT be listening to when they’re hanging out….tori amos, for example. and another prime one is what i witnessed the other day.

in austin, the icebat’s hockey team play in what is a RODEO arena the last month of the season, so i have to go pull equipment. when i was out there, there was a construction crew putting up the rodeo stuff. men. guys. workers. and what were they listening to? what were they hammering, and WELDING in time with?

CHER!?!?!?!

fucking CHER!!!! okay, bad sign number one is the fact that i recognized “believe” so quickly, but i blame that on my record store experience when i used to have to listen to and know EVERYTHING about music. i can only thinking of one cher experience that was positive in my life…shootin through san marcos on i35 with the top down on a miata. at the wheel was this incredible woman (that rare combo that’s beautiful enough to get my attention, and brilliant and witty enough to keep it…except she’s even RARER..she did it in the OPPOSITE order…long story) anyway, SHE was driving, it was HER car, and so i had to listen to cher. she was singing along (she has a good voice, too). and we were listening to “strong enough”…which then got wedged in my head for two or three days,and it took 6 hours of head doctoring from dr. cuervo to dislodge it, although now that i’m thinking of that wonderful afternoon in san marcos, the song’s coming back to me….guess i may have to have a margarita or two with dinner tonight…
