apparently “DM” will stand for “Damn it, Missed ’em!” for a change

in life it’s good to have consistency…

…and it’s hard to get much more consistent than this:

dm88

(as the pic quality shows i haven’t upgraded the ol’ phone yet)

that’s the flyer i boosted from the frank erwin center (side note: promote frank erwin, who “the drum” is named after, is an old drinking buddy of my dad’s) for my “first concert”. i put it in quotes ’cause it all depends on who you ask. i count it as my first as it was my first MUSICAL concert, on may 11th, 1988. my first ticketed concert, as i’ve mentioned on her before, was samn kinison at the paramount theater on my sixteenth birthday (6/19/1987). that was the last time i got to see sam before he passed…

…but i’ve caught depeche mode every time they’ve passed through texas since. saw them at the erwin center on the masses tour in 1988, the starplex in dallas on the 1990 “world violation tour” (with nitzer ebb opening, which was awesome and a good tie in since i first heard them as pre-show music on the masses tour although OMD was the opener on that one, also excellent!), then back to the erwin center for “faith and devotion” part i (october 1993 – first of several shows with kathi along with me) then the now demolished (we had nothing to do with that) hemisfair arena in san antonio for faith and devotion part ii (june 1994), than the alamodome in SA for the “singles…” tour (november 1998), the exciter tour in SA at verizon wireless ampitheater (july 2001 – last proper DM show with kathi), then the “touring the angel” show at the SBC center in SA (november 2005 – realize that’s four SA shows at four different venues two of which are now GONE?) and then i trekked off to houston (as there was no SA show) for the universe tour in august of 2009.

(it should be noted that most of the dates above were off google, so don’t give my memory THAT much credit)

but now they’re returning to austin next week…which is good, except for it’s an ultra-exclusive sxsw showcase whereby you can only get in if you have a badge, enter your badge in the online lottery, and win entry that way with no hard tickets ever existing – you have to go up, show your badge (which has a photo built into it and is hologram-coded with your name on it) or maybe, if you’re a big dog you’re on a list.

i’m shooting for the second. emails have been sent. favors have been called in.

but as it’s on a friday night, when i work, i can’t just go downtown and try – if it ain’t set up in advance, i can’t even really try for it…so we’ll see. at least i’m realistic enough to realize this is far less than a 50/50 shot…more like a 90/10 at best – and NOT in my favor. ten years ago this could have been a 70/30 IN my favor…but now? guess we’ll see…

I SO long for the days when we could just (quite literally) walk in the door and have kick-ass floor seats. **Sigh**
